Laura Skelton

Prix-prix is home to necktie necklaces, necktie wallets, recycled notebooks, and eco-friendly accessories. Laura Skelton is the designer-maker behind prix-prix, the company she started in July 2007. Currently prix-prix is based in San Diego, California. Prix-prix designs tend to be simple and clear with nothing simply stuck on for frill or whimsy. This minimalist, clean-lined design aesthetic draws from Laura’s architecture background and is what helps her work to be bold without going over the top.

Prix-prix is committed to using sustainable materials and practices whenever possible. Raw materials found in thrift stores and the backs of closets, with their funky patterns and unique histories, are the inspiration behind many prix-prix creations. These components are integrated into the design in such a way that closer inspection of the patterns and textures is needed to realize what they used to be. The recycled materials prix-prix uses are inexpensive, abundant, and have a character that only comes with having a previous life. Even when used in the same design over and over, because of the inherent singularity of the material the results are not cookie-cutter copies of one another.

Prix-prix has been featured in NICHE Magazine, the Times-Picayune, Time Out New York, the Washington Post, US News, TreeHugger, Design*Sponge, Uncrate, ThreadBanger, and StyleList, among many other publications. Prix-Prix is featured in the new book Refashioned Bags by Faith and Justina Blakeney.

Before starting prix-prix, Laura worked for Stanley Tigerman doing sustainable architecture in Chicago. She graduated from Columbia University in 2006 with a major in Architecture. During her studies at Columbia in 2005, Laura did a design internship with Peter Eisenman Architects. She loves to design and make things, and is especially interested in making lovely things out of recycled and sustainable materials. Prix-prix is a nickname her friends gave her in high school, around the time she first started designing accessories made from old jeans and neckties.
